Fertility Issues

Infertility

Infertility is usually defined as the failure to conceive after one year of unprotected intercourse. 80% of couples should conceive after 1 year while another 10% will take 2 years.

Many couples defer starting a family until their careers are established and when they do decide to try, the woman’s age may be mean falling pregnant does not happen as quickly as they would wish. There are many reasons for a delay in falling pregnant other than age, including irregular menstruation, hormonal imbalance and stress. Stress and lifestyle issues such as drinking and smoking also affect male fertility.

Acupuncture is increasingly recommended by medical practitioners to help improve fertility.

How can Acupuncture help you fall pregnant?

Acupuncture can assist in normalising your hormones and improve ovarian function to produce better quality eggs. It increases blood flow to the uterus and increases the depth of the endometrium. It helps to de-stress you while strengthening your immune system.

For men acupuncture will improve sperm quality, quantity and morphology and will also have the general effect of improving immune system and tackling stress.

Acupuncture and IVF or assisted pregnancy

Acupuncture has been shown to improve the number of follicles produced in an IVF cycle and increasing the depth of the endometrium. It increases the chances of a successful implantation of an embryo.

Preparing for IVF with Acupuncture

Ideally you should start your acupuncture sessions three months before you begin IVF treatments to ensure that when the time comes to harvest eggs, the yield and the quality will be optimal. Some patients even fall pregnant naturally before they start the IVF!

Treatment during pregnancy

Once you do fall pregnant, acupuncture can help decrease the likelihood of miscarriage and reduce the effects of nausea of early pregnancy.

A study carried out in Germany showed that acupuncture treatment from week 37 helped women have an easier and shorter labour.
